We received this email from Yazaki sensei last week.  I want this to be the first announcement posted on our web site.  He wrote it in Japanese and asked us to translate,  so I did my best.   If any other Japanese speaking members want to add or correct his letter, please feel free to do so.--- Iko

Hello NKC members,

As soon as I returned to Japan on 3/21, I had to go to Hikone in Shiga prefecture to take over my new position.  I then had to go back to Tokyo to pack again.  Now,  I am back in Hikone and officially started my new position.

The great earthquake in the northern Japan has caused a lot of damage.  In Tokyo, rolling blackouts continue even now.  I imagine this will continue for a few more years.  There was no damage to my home in Tokyo; however, because of the rolling blackouts it has gotten harder to buy or get anything.  Hikone was not affected at all by the earthquake.  We are busy trying to send material and personnel to support the northern Tokyo plant which was damaged in the earthquake.  I have no idea what is going to happen to Japan in the future.....

I have returned to Hikone after 3 years, and it is a very nice place. All my friends warmly welcomed me back.  I have already gone out for a drink with them several times.  Last week we all went to another town called Nagahama to practice kendo.  To me, all the Japanese kendoists seem hard and strong, but it was a very good practice.  This weekend I am planning to drive down (about 1.5 hours) to the “Butokuden” in Kyoto to practice more kendo.

Work-wise,  I am very busy, it seems new assignments come in every 30 minutes to an hour.  I used to have a lot more free time in the USA, so I miss that a lot.

How is the  kendo practice at NKC going?  Do you have any problems?   Please listen and follow Imai sensei’s lead.  He is well qualified to teach you good kendo.

Take care and I will write you again.

S. Yazaki
